Alicia Vikander training & diet for Tomb Raider 2018
Alicia Vikander has followed in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie to play the role of Lara Croft in the film Tomb Raider, which is based on the popular computer game. In order to prepare for the role, Alicia got into top shape and is said to have gained 12 lbs of muscle. We can say that she looks in great shape, and definitely looks convincing as someone that can run, climb, swim and fight her way through the movie!
Below is a video of how she did it.
In order get in shape, Alicia contacted trainer Magnus Lygdback because she knew of his work getting Alexander Skarsgard in shape for the movie Tarzan using what is known as the “Magnus Method”. Interestingly Magnus has helped many celebrities get in shape for movie roles including:
- James McAvoy for Split
- Ben Afflect for Batman
- Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman
- Other celebrities such as Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Harry Styles etc
Training started 7 months before filming began, and they started by working 5 times a week on strength and movement training. When they were 3 months in, they started to increase the volume of training as Alicia started doing MMA training, climbing and stunt work to prepare for the role.
Once filming started, Alicia would be up at 4am every day to train full body workout sessions on the beach before she went onto set for a day of filming. These often took place on the beach at the various filming locations for the movie!
In terms of diet, Alicia is said to have used a keto diet approach which is a high fat and either very low or zero carb diet. Her protein intake was kept high to maintain her muscle and maintain low levels of body fat. Her protein sources came largely from seafood such as salmon, and fats were “healthy sources” such as MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides), avocados and coconut oil.
Alicia said that the process didn’t just change her physically; mentally it have her a feeling of strength, confidence and empowerment. Magnus also released six episodes of how to train like Alicia for Tomb Raider, which you can see from his Instagram account at @magnuslygdback which you should definitely check out.
