Not long ago I was sent a budget action cam called the Muson MC1, and I was asked to do a video review of it. Being a big fan of action cams (I’ve acquired more than a few over the years) I was happy to test it out and see how it performed, but I thought it would be interesting to benchmark the quality against 3 other GoPro models which I just happened to have in my kit bag! I compared it to:

  • GoPro Hero
  • GoPro Hero 4 Silver
  • GoPro 5 Black

You can see my review here:

In order to keep the comparison videos as fair as possible, I commissioned Stephen Ludgate to design and create a custom mount that would hold 4 cameras simultaneously. You can see the final design with all of the cameras attached below.

Pretty cool, right? If you ever need any custom designs 3D printing then make sure you check out Steve’s 3D Hubs page here:

I don’t want to spoil the video review by writing it up here in the blog, but overall I was impressed with the product especially for the price. Although it was a little basic compared to what I’m used to, it would be an excellent starter camera if you’re testing the water to see if this is a hobby you may be interested in. Another advantage given the price, is that it would be great for obstacle courses like X-Runner or Tough Mudder – I lost a GoPro Hero 4 Black at a Born Survivor OCR event, and losing a £350 camera at the time really sucked. Although I would be sad to lose any camera, one that comes in at sub £50 I can definitely live with.
